General Laptop Carrying Case Care

Make Sure Your Laptop Carrying Case Lasts

By Catherine Roseberry, About.com

It is important to know how to properly take care of your laptop carrying case so that you get many years of use from it. Use these care and cleaning tips to help you ensure that your laptop and other mobile gear will stay protected in your laptop carrying case.

Laptop Case Hardware:

  • If the hardware gets wet - wipe off as soon as possible so that it won't rust,
  • Don't apply oil to locks and hinges - it can leak into the case,
  • If the hardware gets scratched or nicked - rub gently with fine steel wool, then re-seal with laquer or clear nail polish.

Zippers:
Never overstuff a laptop carrying case of any style -

  • Puts too much stress on the zippers,
  • Cause them to rip from their seams,
  • Cause the zipper to split.

If zipper teeth are stuck, use a lead pencil and draw up and down both sides of the zipper. You can also use waxed paper to help the zipper work more smoothly.

You can repair zippers that have pulled away - provided you have the proper tools. Katherine Blocksdorf, About Guide to Horses has an easy to follow process for Repairing Stitching in Leather and Heavy Fabrics that is most useful.

Wheels on Roller Cases:

  • Use WD-40 on axles to keep wheels rolling smoothly and quietly.
  • Never bounce your case on the wheels going up or down stairs.
  • Avoid going through wet areas whenever possible. If it can't be avoided be sure to clean and dry off the wheel areas as soon as possible.

Telescopic Handle:

  • Always properly extend the handle before using. Make sure it has locked into position before pulling it.
  • Do not carry the case by the handle - use the shoulder strap or handgrip handle.
  • You can use WD-40 on the telescoping handle to prevent stiffness over time. Some stiffness is normal with a new roller laptop carrying case.

Protection:

  • Before you use your laptop case for the first time, apply a good quality protectant to your laptop carrying case. Make sure you have purchased one that is correct for the material that your laptop case is constructed of. Any time you clean your laptop case, be sure to apply the protectant again.
